Premier League Saturday: Feb. 25, 2012

The big matches in English football are tomorrow, but that doesn’t mean that today’s matches are meaningless. Chelsea, for example, take on Bolton at Stamford Bridge. Andre Villas-Boas is like a ticking time bomb, and today The Guardian reported that Villas-Boas warned Chelsea fans that it may get worse before it gets better for the Blues. These are hardly words to encourage, motivate or infuse his Chelsea players with confidence. It sounds more like an insurance policy.

While Roman Abramovich will be examining the Chelsea-Bolton match in minute detail, we TV and Internet viewers can choose between that and four other 10am ET/3pm GMT matches. Alongside Chelsea-Bolton will be QPR against Fulham in the west London derby. Except a lot of fireworks in that one between Mark Hughes and Martin Jol.

In the other 10am ET games, Terry Connor takes charge of his first game for Wolves. And it’s a tough one to start, away to Newcastle United. West Brom take on Sunderland in what should be an entertaining game. And last but not least, Wigan is at home against Aston Villa in a must-win game for Roberto Martinez’s side.

The final match of the day is Manchester City against Blackburn Rovers. Earlier this week, Chris Samba was supposed to return for Rovers, but the Lancashire club has completed a £9m move from Blackburn to the Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala. The loss of Samba will have a detrimental impact on Blackburn, and could be the difference between the club staying up and going down. Expect Rovers to play hard against an effervescent Manchester City side who will want to open up a gap at the top of the table.
