Portugal's Nani ruled out of Faroe Islands clash

Lisbon (AFP) – Valencia forward Nani has been ruled out of Portugal’s World Cup qualifier away against the Faroe Islands on Monday due to injury, the Portuguese Football Federation said.

Nani, 29, who played a starring role in Portugal’s Euro 2016 triumph, already missed Portugal’s 6-0 defeat of Andorra at home on Friday because of a muscle strain in his right leg.

According to an evaluation by the Portuguese Football Federation’s health department, the player “is not fit for the match on Monday” and would not travel to the Faroe Islands.

Portugal began their qualifying campaign for Russia 2018 with a 2-0 loss away to Switzerland on September 6.

They are third in Group B, a point behind minnows Faroe Islands and three back from leaders Switzerland.
