John Terry No Longer Automatic Chelsea Pick, Says Roberto Di Matteo: The Nightly EPL

In another example of Roberto Di Matteo’s maturity and growth as a football manager, the Chelsea manager has said that “I don’t think anybody’s guaranteed a starting place [on the Chelsea team]. They all have to work and be fighting for their place in the team.”

While that may not seem that newsworthy, I believe it is especially when you consider that the Chelsea team is in transition from the old Mourinho guard (Lampard and Terry) to the new-and-improved side that has much more depth. It means that players like Terry have to fight for his place on the team against teammates David Luiz, Gary Cahill and Branislav Ivanovic. Competition for places is always a good sign, and Di Matteo has done a fantastic job at keeping everyone happy at Stamford Bridge. It’s hard to believe that this is the same manager who was sacked by West Bromwich Albion just a couple of years ago.
