Despite rumors throughout the summer transfer window that Brad Guzan was heading out of Aston Villa, it seems that the American might be manager Tim Sherwood’s number one choice for goalkeeper for the 2015-2016 Premier League season after all.
Guzan was the first choice at the beginning of last season but was forced to sit on the bench for the last few games of the 2014-2015 season after Shay Given earned the place after poor form from Guzan.
Sherwood was reportedly looking at acquiring a replacement for the American until the search turned cold, leaving Guzan as the likely choice for starter next season, according to the Birmingham Mail newspaper
Birmingham Mail have also reported that Villa have more important positions to look at and seem ready to give Guzan another chance. Mark Bunn was brought in to replace Given but seems prepared to play second fiddle to Guzan saying, “I’m going to work really hard to break into the team and if I don’t then I’ll push the other goalkeepers to make them better.”
Given joined Stoke City last week.
Although not currently with the rest of the Villa squad in Portugal, Guzan is starting for the U.S. Men’s National Team as they attempt to defend their Gold Cup title. So far, Guzan has only allowed one goal throughout the tournament. Now that the U.S. have punched their ticket to the knock-out stages, Guzan will start to face tougher opponents but seems likely to keep his place in goal.
The development at Aston Villa is positive news for Guzan, but it is more a lack of options than a declaration of faith from Sherwood. The American is used to fighting for his spot, and has done just that during the majority of his career for the USMNT and he will need to fight to remain in goal for Villa next season.
