A-league hotshot Krishna leaves Phoenix for new venture abroad

Wellington (AFP) – Wellington Phoenix and Fiji striker Roy Krishna announced Monday he is leaving the A-League after a stellar season which saw him named the competition’s best player and win the Golden Boot.

Krishna, 31, did not name his destination but media reports in Australia said he had been snapped up by an unnamed Korean club.

Krishna said he decided to move on after five years with the New Zealand-based Phoenix following discussions with his family.

“We have negotiated a contract and we are currently working out the finer details,” he said in a statement.

“We will be announcing the club name… towards the end of June.”

Krishna, who captains the Fiji national team, was the A-League’s top scorer with 18 goals in 26 matches, helping the Phoenix to their first finals appearance in four years.

His efforts resulted in Krishna receiving the Johnny Warren Medal for the A-League’s player of the year.

He had reportedly generated interest from other A-League clubs but Krishna said he would have remained with the Phoenix if he was staying in the competition.

The Phoenix issued a statement thanking Krishna for his “enormous contribution” to the club and wishing him well for the future.
