Super Classico Ends in Draw

Galindo gave Chivas USA a first half lead
The closest thing the United States has to a European Derby match is the Honda Superclassico which features the LA Galaxy and LA based Chivas USA. These games typically have much more active crowd participation than a typical MLS or USL match. Today’s Superclassico was an exciting back and forth match that ended in a draw. Maykel Galindo scored a late first half goal to put Chivas ahead 1 to 0. Landon Donovan came back and pounced a fortuitous bounce of the ball to even the match at 1 in the 50th minute. Chivas has several chances to net a winner most notably an Ante Razov header that went just over the bar in the 79th minute. Controversy ensued in the 87th minute when Galaxy GK Joe Cannon appeared to trip Chivas’ French International Laurent Merlin. No penalty was called and in stoppage time Chivas GK Brad Guzan made a mess of what should have been a routine save and LA almost got a cheap winner.

The game ended in a 1-1 draw.
