Metalist Kharkiv Disqualified From UEFA Competitions For The 2013/14 Season

Ukrainian club FC Metalist Kharkiv have been disqualified from UEFA competitions for the 2013/14 season following the conclusion of disciplinary proceedings by UEFA.

The former Soviet club have been ejected after UEFA’s investigation into claims of match-fixing. The club was found guilty of fixing a match in the Ukrainian league during the 2007-08 season. One of the club’s sporting directors was among the persons sentenced in the trial, and UEFA ruled that he wasn’t allowed to work in soccer for five years. However, the sporting director in question (Yevhen Krasnikov) is listed on the club’s website as their sporting director.

UEFA has to decide how they’ll resolve the issue of Metalist being kicked out of the tournament. In the previous round of UEFA Champions League qualifying, Metalist defeated PAOK Thessaloniki, so it’s conceivable that UEFA will allow PAOK to go through to the next round of the UEFA Champions League match (against Schalke) instead of Metalist.
