AZ Alkmaar

Vincent Janssen is drawing interest from Arsenal and Liverpool

Dutch club AZ Alkmaar secured the signing of striker Vincent Janssen just last summer from Almere City, a club in the second-tiered Eerste Divisie.  Yet after a superb freshman campaign with the Cheeseheads, Janssen is already being linked with a move to the Premier League.  At just 21-years-old, the Netherlands international netted an impressive 32 total goals with AZ during the 2015/16 season, with a league-leading 27 of these goals coming in Eredivisie play.

The Telegraph’s Jeremy Wilson recently claimed that Arsenal have sent scouts to the Netherlands to watch Janssen play first-hand and that the north London outfit will be pursuing the Dutch striker during the upcoming transfer window. Liverpool and Manchester United are also reportedly interested in Janssen’s signature as well.

The player’s agent, Patrick van Diemen, welcomed this admiration from big teams and admitted that Janssen could make a summer switch “provided it’s a good club.” Van Diemen went on to tell FOX Sports, “Vincent has had a brilliant season, he has made his debut in the Dutch National Team.  It’s made him hungry for more.  AZ is fantastic, but if you have the opportunity to take the next step… then that’s what you should do as a sportsman.”

Van Diemen also stated that there is not a release clause currently in his client’s contract with the Dutch club.  “AZ may ask what it wants for Janssen, because he is fixed for three years and his contract contains no predetermined release clause,” said the agent.

Janssen has been likened to Dutch superstars Ruud van Nistelrooy and Robin van Persie; however, when talking about players currently plying their trade in the Premier League, Janssen’s 2015/16 Eredivisie numbers look very similar to those of Harry Kane’s this season.

The 21-year-old Janssen does not necessarily have a lot of tricks in the bag, but he is a clinical finisher inside of the box. His movement off of the ball is also fantastic. The striker puts himself into the correct spaces on the pitch and chooses nice runs, which help make goalscoring easier. Janssen is predominately left footed, but he can also score with his right foot as well. During league play this season, he has scored 15 goals with his left foot, 10 with his right, and two headers.

AZ may do everything they can to hang on to their prized possession this summer, but if the big clubs such as Arsenal, Liverpool, and Manchester United are looking for a quality, young striker that won’t cost £30 or £40 million, Janssen could be their solution.
