USMNT Injury Report: Altidore Improving But Out Against Portugal

Jozy Altidore is officially out of the starting XI for the USMNT’s game against Portugal on Sunday in Manaus. After suffering a hamstring injury during the United State’s victory against Ghana, Altidore was carried off the pitch and underwent MRI scans at the team’s base in Sao Paulo. The Sunderland striker is unlikely to see any playing time unless the U.S. progress out of the group stage.  However, ESPN reported this evening that Altidore was walking with less awkwardness and pain then yesterday.

Altidore appeared on Good Morning America stating, “I’m just going to focus on getting myself right and being the best cheerleader possible for the team.”

The United States suffered multiple injuries during the match with Ghana, one being captain Clint Dempsey breaking his nose on John Boye’s shin guard when chasing a high ball. Dempsey was cleaned up on the sidelines and returned to play, admitting that he got tired from trouble breathing but should be 100% by Sunday.

Both Matt Besler and Alejandro Bedoya complained of tight hamstrings but were able to stretch out and rest part of the game. After undergoing MRI scans in Sao Paulo Besler and Bedoya are expected to play against Portugal.

The only change the starting XI is likely to see would be Aron Johansonn or Chris Wondolowski replacing Altidore up front alongside Dempsey.
