Spanish league chief Tebas stands for re-election

Madrid (AFP) – President of La Liga Javier Tebas announced he will stand for re-election as he resigned from his role to kickstart the process for new elections on Wednesday.

“I have formally presented my resignation as president of La Liga,” Tebas posted on his official Twitter account.

“A new electoral process is opened in which I will return to request the confidence of the clubs.”

Tebas was elected president in 2013 and is so far the only candidate to announce his intention to run.

The election will take place next month.

Tebas has overseen a significant change in the distribution of television rights in La Liga with a collective agreement far more beneficial to the league’s smaller clubs.

La Liga have signed national and international TV rights deals worth 1.48 billion euros a season ($1.65 billion), up from 800 million a season under the old system.

Tebas’s other initiatives have included a crackdown on offensive chants and violence from ultras and a series of investigations into match-fixing.
