Germany down England in She Believes Cup

Washington (AFP) – A first-half goal from Anja Mittag handed Germany a 1-0 victory over England in the final round of the She Believes quadrangular women’s football tournament in Washington on Tuesday.

Mittag bundled home the winner in the 44th minute at RFK Stadium as Germany secured their first win following a draw with France and defeat against the United States in their opening games last week.

Germany held on for the victory despite a furious late onslaught from England, who came closest to equalising in injury time when Toni Duggan went clear on goal only to be denied from close range.

France can win the four-way round-robin tournament in Tuesday’s later game with a draw or victory over the USA.
