BBC Presenter David Coleman Has Died At Age 87

Legendary BBC presenter David Coleman has died at the age of 87 after a short illness, according to a member of his family.

Coleman, who covered six World Cup tournaments for BBC as a commentator — including the finals of 1974 and 1978 — and a seventh World Cup (1982) as a presenter, was a very familiar voice and face on BBC programs such as Grandstand, Sportsnight With Coleman and A Question Of Sport.

“David Coleman was one of this country’s greatest and most respected broadcasters,” said the BBC’s director general Tony Hall. “Generations grew up listening to his distinctive and knowledgeable commentary. Whether presenting, commentating or offering analysis, he set the standard for all today’s sports broadcasters.

“Our thoughts are with his family and many friends.”
