CONCACAF Nations League
The USA-Grenada contest is the first game for both sides in the second-ever CONCACAF Nations League. Like that of UEFA, this competition exists to give some more life to the traditional friendlies. That being said, the teams in North America and the Caribbean are generally weaker than those in Europe. Therefore, many of the games are not as competitive as possible.
For example, this game pits the Nations League and Gold Cup winners against a Grenada side which only has three Gold Cup appearances.
However, it is still a trophy, and many national team players still treat it as such. Looking back at 2021, the knockout portion of the competition certainly lived up to the designation as a tournament. The USMNT squeaked by Honduras with a Jordan Pefok goal in the 89th minute. Then, Mexico and the U.S. played a dramatic final featuring penalties, stoppage time and conflict. Essentially, it was all the makings of a Mexico-U.S. game.
The Nations League win a year ago was something of a breakout party for this batch of USMNT talent. With their first World Cup approaching later in the year, ESPN’s studio analyst and former USMNT player Herculez Gomez says there are only so many opportunities to grow as a team. In an exclusive interview with World Soccer Talk, he said:
“The way the FIFA calendar is now with the Nations League in Europe, you are not going to get quality opponents. So, the matches that you have right now are crucial to have a team gel.”
Gomez, who appears on ESPN+ program Futbol Americas alongside Sebastian Salazar, breaks down soccer in the Americas on Mondays and Thursdays at 8:30 p.m. ET.
World Cup Preparation
The USA vs Grenada game on TV is the last home game for the Americans before the 2022 World Cup. The squad will have a road game against El Salvador in this competition. Then, in September, the U.S. has two games scheduled reportedly against Asian World Cup nations.
There are just four games remaining before the US opens its World Cup campaign in November against Wales. CONCACAF Nations League games like this are a great chance for the nation to grow, as says USMNT forward Jordan Morris to reporters before the Grenada fixture.
“We want to continue to get better as a team because there are not that many games left until the World Cup.”
On the outside looking in, it is the last opportunity for a number of players to prove themselves for the World Cup squad. Gomez noted that the pressure could be mounting on some players.
“It is an uneasy feeling knowing that. Some players who maybe feel they should feature more, maybe feel they should have done more, maybe feel this could be their last opportunity, these games matter.”
Therefore, this kind of game has a special significance, even if Grenada is not in the top 150 nations in the FIFA World Rankings.
