Ashley Cole to Captain England for Friendly Against Republic Of Ireland

Chelsea defender Ashley Cole will captain England for tomorrow’s friendly against the Republic of Ireland.

England manager Roy Hodgson announced the news today alongside England midfielder Frank Lampard. Hodgson explained that he spoke to Lampard and that the both of them agreed to give Ashley Cole the honor of captaining the team as a way of commemorating Cole’s recent milestone of reaching 100 caps for England.

England’s captain is Steven Gerrard, but due to his shoulder injury, Lampard is the current captain. The Chelsea midfielder will give the honor to Cole tomorrow. Lampard called Cole “probably the most consistent left back in world football.”

For viewers in the United States, the England against Ireland match will be televised live tomorrow on FOX Soccer at 3pm ET.
