Pulisic responds, clarifies stance
Weeks later, Pulisic addressed the situation on CBS Sports Golazo with Jimmy Conrad and others. He explained that his intention had been to participate in the pre-Gold Cup friendlies before stepping away, but Pochettino declined, preferring roster consistency. “I respected it, but I didn’t fully understand it,” Pulisic said.
“I did want to be a part of at least the two friendlies, but they said no… I had to make the best decision for myself and, in the long run, for my team.”
He acknowledged the public backlash but insisted he doesn’t owe anyone an explanation. However, he admitted that criticism from former players “hurt a little,” as he grew up idolizing many of them.
Mark Pulisic fires back at Donovan
Before Christian made his statement, his father, Mark Pulisic, took to Instagram to defend his son and criticize Donovan. Referencing Donovan’s own sabbatical in 2013—when he missed World Cup qualifiers—Mark shared a screenshot from ChatGPT summarizing that decision and accused Donovan of hypocrisy.
