London (AFP) – Will Grigg’s lead role in Wigan’s memorable run to the FA Cup quarter-finals has been celebrated with a “hot and fiery” pie named in his honour.

Grigg scored the winning goal in third tier Wigan’s shock 1-0 win over Premier League leaders Manchester City in the fifth round and also netted in their upset victory against West Ham.

With the Latics eyeing another famous scalp when they face struggling Southampton in the last eight on Sunday, a bakery in Wigan has immortalised Grigg in pastry form.

Grigg is well known for the “Will Grigg’s on fire” chant by Wigan fans and Northern Ireland supporters, who took the song global when he played for his country at Euro 2016.

And The Rolling Pin Bakery used the chant as the inspiration for a spicy chicken, chorizo and onion pie, which will be sold before the quarter-final against Southampton, complete with an FA Cup trophy on its crust.

Dave and Sue Shaw, owners of the bakery, said: “Reaching the quarter-finals has created a real atmosphere in the town and is also expected to provide local businesses like ours with a massive boost.

“We’re expecting a bumper trade this weekend. As a way of celebrating the cup run and saying thank you to the club, players and fans, we worked with the FA to create this hot and fiery pie that reflects Will Grigg’s performances in the competition.”

It is the third time in six seasons Wigan have made it to the FA Cup quarter-finals, with Roberto Martinez’s side famously beating City in the final in 2013.

Wigan have already knocked out Bournemouth, West Ham and City, leaving some supporters dreaming of a trip to Wembley for the semi-finals.

But Wigan boss Paul Cook said: “One of my pals texted me yesterday to say, ‘I won’t be able to come across for this one but I’ll get to the semi-final’. And I just looked at the text as if to say, ‘What planet is he on?’

“It’s like people aren’t disrespecting us enough now and respecting Southampton enough.

“In our dressing room we’re fully aware what we’re about to engage with.”
