US Soccer releases World Cup roster announcement details

On Nov. 9, fans of the United States Men’s National Team will have an announcement with details for the World Cup 2022 roster. Gregg Berhalter and select players will be in-person during the 26-man release. Fans can watch all the coverage on ESPN2 and ESPN+ that evening.

The whole event starts at 5 p.m., with live coverage from Brooklyn Steel in New York City. Brooklyn Steel, an 1,800-capacity music venue, is a hall where attendees stand. However, the event is invite-only. There is also a reception and post-reveal party on either side of the actual announcement of names.

For those watching at home, the hourlong program is available through both traditional TV and streaming. As stated, viewers can watch at 5 p.m. on either ESPN2 or ESPN+. In addition to the reveal and Gregg Berhalter, there are players that will be making the trip to Qatar to play. However, as this is on a Wednesday, with midweek games rife before the World Cup, it is likely that many of the players in attendance will be those on MLS teams. By Nov. 9, MLS Cup is finished, leaving the door open in terms of timing.

That is not to say these in-person players are only MLS representatives. US Soccer is careful not to release the World Cup roster announcement names before the big reveal.

US World Cup Roster Announcement

The thing about the 26 players making the trip to Qatar for the World Cup is the remarkable lack of experience. On top of failing to qualify in 2018, the United States had the youngest squad among all teams in Qatar through qualifying. Ghana’s squad throughout qualification had an average age of 25.67. The USMNT, on the other hand, averaged 23.82.

There are a couple of locks for the trip to Qatar. Christian Pulisic, Walker Zimmerman, Matt Turner, Weston McKennie, Antonee Robinson and others have virtually locked up their spots.

However, there is still uncertainty. Gregg Berhalter said he is about 85% set on his final squad. Therefore, he has about four names to solidify on his list for Qatar.

Regardless of the final squad, Berhalter, as well as the players, carry immense pressure. With the growing popularity of the sport and the expectations that follow, this young squad has a tall task.

That starts against Wales on Nov. 21 as the Stars and Stripes take on Gareth Bale and Wales.
