It’s the news that soccer fans with Comcast have been waiting for. ESPN and Comcast have agreed to deal to bring ESPN 360 to Comcast customers by the fall of 2009.
Up until now, none of the 17 million Comcast subscribers had access to ESPN 360, the broadband video site that features the Champions League, Coca-Cola Championship, Serie A, Major League Soccer, Bundesliga and several other leagues.
Currently, ESPN 360 is only available to AT&T, Verizon and smaller cable companies. By adding Comcast, ESPN360 will be available to 41 million Americans.
The news does raise the question whether or not ESPN will try to acquire the Internet rights to the Premier League for the 2010-2013 seasons. The winner is scheduled to be announced later this year. If ESPN is able to acquire those rights, that would be a massive coup for the broadcaster. Plus it give them the opportunity to bring the Premier League into the homes of broadband users across the United States. As a comparison, Fox Soccer Channel currently is in 34 million homes.
