How can Nike design remarkable kits for England but not USA?

England announced and revealed its new kits for the upcoming World Cup.

The home jerseys consist of a white base with a gradient blue detail atop the shoulders. Mixed into the color on the shoulder is a distorted Three Lions logo and lines represented claw marks. Blue shorts and white socks complete the home kit look.

While the home jerseys fall a bit flat, the away kits are very clean. In an ode to their early 1990s away kits, England went with an all red look. Bright red solid jersey and shorts make these kits stand out. A blue collar with Thee Lions detail was also a good choice.

England World Cup kits inspired by early 90’s

Nike apparently took inspiration of the bold looks from the fact that the England national team features an exciting young core group of players. Vibrant colors and the particular shades of blue and red give the Three Lions a more youthful vibe than in recent years.

Hints to the ’90s are obviously very fashionable right now as well. Although inspirations for the two kits were taken from multiple previous England looks, it does appear that these particular jerseys are most influenced by the 1992 Euro kits. Despite the fact that the home jersey does not contain a collar. The Three Lions will hope their World Cup endeavors play out better than their ’92 Euros performance. England finished bottom of their group that year.

The new World Cup jerseys by Nike have not exactly been welcomed with open arms. USMNT midfielder Yunus Musah recently had some interesting remarks regarding the new American kits. “The kits are … yeah,” Musah amusingly stated. “They’re the kits that they made, you know?”

Nike, however, is not concerned about the backlash. Company senior director of soccer appeal Aaron Barnett claimed that fans will eventually come around on the designs. “People always hate the new jerseys at first,” Barnett said at an event last month. “Then your team wins its first game, and it’s the best jersey they’ve ever had.”

While many have bashed Nike’s current designs, they at least nailed the England away kit.
