Sporting's Matheus Nunes on the radar of Liverpool, Chelsea

Sporting Lisbon midfielder Matheus Nunes could be a late summer acquisition with a pair of Premier League clubs monitoring. In particular, the 23-year-old has reportedly generated interest via a late move from Liverpool. This past season, Nunes assumed a vital part in the center of the pitch under manager Rúben Amorim.

Across 50 games in all competitions in 2021/22, Nunes scored four goals and provided five assists. Three goals and two assists of that lot came in 33 Primeira Liga games. Before then, Nunes emerged into Sporting Lisbon’s starting side during the 2020/21 campaign. Then, he helped Sporting to its first league championship since 2000/01 and 19th in its history. In fact, his impact yielded a contract expansion with the club until 2026.

Sporting suffered a crucial departure earlier in the summer. Previously, Joao Palhinha departed for the Premier League in the services at Craven Cottage and Fulham. Therefore, the potential transfer of Nunes away from his home country provides more of a troubling scenario for Sporting.

Portuguese outlet O Jogo reports that Amorim, Sporting’s head coach, in no way wants to allow Nunes to depart Portugal. Moreover, he claims to have persuaded the 23-year-old midfielder to wait for at least another season. Moreover, Nunes is under contract at Sporting for an additional four years. Consequently, it would take a potential suitor somewhere in the realm of $55 million to lure the Portuguese away. Plus, Sporting likely seeks out more in that case.

Sporting’s Matheus Nunes potential move to the Premier League

Chelsea, Liverpool and Wolverhampton Wanderers are all careful to note this information. Each of these Premier League clubs expressed an interest and are prepared to match each other to secure the signing of Matheus Nunes this summer.

Nunes, actually born in Brazil, arrived at Sporting in January 2019. He is just shy of the century mark in appearances for the club, totaling seven goals and eight assists.

Nunes brought home one Primeira Liga championship, two Taca da Liga prizes and one Supertaca Candido de Oliveira title in the beyond three-and-a-half years. However, Liverpool head coach Jurgen Klopp does not anticipate that his side should make additional signings one way or the other.

Hypothetically, this opens the door wider for a club like Chelsea or Wolves to swoop in for his services.
