Robert Lewandowski compares Real Madrid newcomer Franco Mastantuono with Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal

After Franco Mastantuono’s arrival at Real Madrid once he turned 18, comparisons were inevitable. The similarities with Lamine Yamal, Barcelona’s brightest young star who also just turned 18, fueled debates about which of the two will dominate the sport for years to come. Both players have already impressed with goals, assists, and fearless dribbling, making them standouts in Europe’s elite.

In this context, Robert Lewandowski weighed in on the discussion. Rather than simply praising the two teenagers, the Polish striker emphasized the pressure that comes with being labeled as the “next big thing.” According to him, the challenge isn’t just about what they show at 18—it’s about sustaining greatness as their careers progress, much like Lionel Messi once did.

Lewandowski told ESPN that modern soccer is becoming “increasingly demanding” and that creates enormous pressure on young players. He added that while Mastantuono and Yamal are currently thriving, the real question is what will happen when they reach 25, 26, or 28 years old. For him, the toughest battle is not shining at 18, but staying at the top for a decade or more.

The veteran striker also pointed out that the search for the “next Messi” is unrealistic. He suggested that Real Madrid fans will naturally look for their own version of Yamal, but he believes it’s “impossible” to replicate such a unique player. Instead, Lewandowski urged that each youngster should be allowed to follow his own path without being burdened by constant comparisons.

To make his point stronger, Lewandowski drew a parallel with the famous Messi vs. Cristiano Ronaldo rivalry. “They were completely different players,” he explained, adding that trying to find the next Messi or Cristiano is a mistake because “they are unique and cannot be replaced.” His comments sparked debate across Spain, especially with Real Madrid and Barcelona both invested in building their future around these prodigies.

Ultimately, the Polish forward made it clear: comparisons between Mastantuono and Yamal are natural, but unfair. Just like Messi and Cristiano defined an era by being themselves, these two new stars must create their own legacy rather than live under someone else’s shadow.

When will Mastantuono and Yamal face off?

Fans won’t have to wait long to see the two rising stars clash. The first El Clásico of the 2025/26 season will take place on October 26, 2025, at the Santiago Bernabéu, with Mastantuono expected to feature for Real Madrid. The return leg is set for May 10, 2026, at Barcelona’s renovated Camp Nou.
