The European governing body has appointed an Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector to assess the conduct of Real Madrid players during and after their dramatic penalty shootout victory against Atlético Madrid on March 12. The main focus of the investigation revolves around certain gestures made by the players, with Rüdiger and Mbappé at the center of the controversy.

Among the accusations, Rüdiger faces the most serious charge. The German defender was captured on camera appearing to make a throat-slitting gesture, reportedly directed at Atletico Madrid fans. Such action has been interpreted as threatening, which could lead to a more severe punishment compared to his teammates.

Meanwhile, Kylian Mbappé is also in the spotlight, with a video circulating online that supposedly shows him making a groin-grabbing gesture while celebrating. The clip has generated debate over whether his actions violated UEFA’s code of conduct.

Potential sanctions for Mbappé, Vinicius, and Ceballos

According to Marca, Mbappé, Vinicius, and Ceballos are likely to receive fines, and UEFA is expected to impose a one-match suspension with deferral. This means that unless they repeat similar behavior in the next year, they will not have to serve the suspension.

Rüdiger’s situation more uncertain

However, Rüdiger’s situation remains uncertain. UEFA officials have reportedly viewed his gesture unfavorably, seeing it as more provocative and aggressive than the other incidents under review. Although a fine and a deferred suspension remain a possible consequence, there is concern within Real Madrid that the German defender could be sanctioned immediately, leaving him out of the crucial first leg of the Champions League quarterfinals.

Real Madrid awaits UEFA’s verdict

With UEFA prepared to announce its verdict on Friday, Real Madrid is in tension, knowing that any suspension could disrupt their preparations for a massive clash with Arsenal. Los Blancos are set to travel to London for the first leg of their quarterfinal against Mikel Arteta’s team on April 8, before hosting the return leg a week later at the Santiago Bernabéu.

The Champions League quarterfinal against Arsenal is a crucial match for Real Madrid. The team is aiming to win the competition for a record 15th time, and they will need all their key players available to achieve that goal.
