Milan’s defeat in the Coppa Italia final has triggered alarm bells throughout the club hierarchy. Failing to win the trophy not only denied the Rossoneri a shot at silverware but also closed off one of the last realistic paths to European qualification. Now, a place in UEFA competitions next season hangs by a thread, dependent on results in the final two Serie A fixtures—and some help from rivals.

But beyond the sporting blow, the financial repercussions are already beginning to reshape Milan’s summer strategy. Without the revenue streams guaranteed by UEFA competition, the club may be forced to sell key players to balance the books and fund a squad overhaul. According to Calciomercato and Corriere della Seraat least one major star is expected to be sold—and Pep Guardiola and Manchester City have already identified their man.

Who is Pep Guardiola’s latest summer target?

Tijjani Reijnders, one of Milan’s two bright spots this season, alongside Christian Pulisic, has been the subject of intense speculation. Over the past few weeks, links to both Manchester City and Real Madrid have surfaced. Now, reliable reports confirm City want to sign the Dutch international—and they want the deal done before the FIFA Club World Cup begins in mid-June.

“Manchester City are pushing to wrap up a deal with Milan by the beginning of June,” writes Calciomercato“so that Reijnders can be part of Guardiola’s squad for the Club World Cup in the United States.”

The 26-year-old has been one of the Red and Blacks’ best players this season, standing out even as the team underwhelmed in both Serie A and Europe. The Netherlands international has become a key figure under both Paulo Fonseca and Sergio Conceicao’s systems, showcasing his all-around midfield qualities with:

He was particularly brilliant at the Santiago Bernabeu, scoring against Real Madrid in a 2–1 group stage win, a performance that reportedly caught the attention of scouts from both Madrid and City.

Milan to demand record-breaking fee

Milan is not keen on letting Reijnders go easily. According to several Italian outlets, the club has set an asking price of $84-89 million, bonuses included, which would exceed the current club sale record set by Sandro Tonali’s $78 million move to Newcastle.

“The Rossoneri have made it clear: they will not sell Reijnders unless the offer is superior to Tonali’s,” states Corriere della Sera“City’s opening bid is expected next week, and it will need to be substantial.”

The Citizens are reportedly ready to offer $78 million, but the Italians are holding firm, demanding more. The player’s market value has tripled since his $22 million move from AZ Alkmaar just two seasons ago, thanks to his consistency and versatility.

The talented Dutchman recently signed a contract extension with the San Siro side until 2030, which nearly doubled his wages. That renewal was seen as a clear signal of the club’s intention to build around him—but the financial realities may soon override sentiment.
