Some media sources have questioned Leeds United why they haven’t been able to utilize Weston McKennie to his full potential after his glowing performance for the US Mens National Team (USMNT) on Friday.

McKennie netted twice in his side’s 7-1 thumping of Grenada in the CONCACAF Nations League on Friday.

The 24-year-old midfielder signed for the Premier League side in the January transfer window on loan from Juventus until the end of the season.

Leeds having the option to make the move permanent for an initial £30m in the summer if certain criteria are met.

McKennie’s slow start at leeds

The midfielder, however, has found it hard to get his footing for the Elland Road side struggling to make an impact in the Premier League. McKennie is yet to score or assist for Leeds having played 8 games, and seeing over 580 minutes of action.

However, playing in his first international match after the World Cup in Qatar, the Leeds player was given an 8.5 rating by MLS Soccer.

Both of his goals came from set pieces and his overall play suggested the shades of an energetic and complete midfielder in the middle of the park.

Media outlet Goal also highlighted McKennie’s brilliant performance on the night claiming he remains an integral part of the USMNT. They also questioned why the player hasn’t been able to replicate the same upturn in form for his club.

Goal mentioned, “Why haven’t Leeds been able to utilize that just yet”, claiming that the Whites need to find a way how to use him better on the pitch after his slow start to life in Yorkshire.

Leeds have struggled this season and are 14th in the Premier League standings, just two clear of the relegation zone.

It will be interesting to see if McKennie’s performance for the national team helps him garner a much-required boost in confidence when he returns to his club after the international break.
