Wrexham ban Paul Mullin boots because of political message

Wrexham AFC banned specific boots worn by star striker Paul Mullin. The 27-year-old forward unveiled the custom shoes on his official Instagram on Monday. The all black Nike boots featured a slogan that heavily criticized the Conservative Party in the United Kingdom.

The Welsh team has previously entered the spotlight thanks to the new ownership of actors Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds. Wrexham currently compete in the National League, the fifth tier in England’s system.

“The Club can confirm that the boots revealed by Paul Mullin on social media will not be worn tonight, or in any other Wrexham AFC fixture,” an official statement read. “The photographs taken at the Racecourse Ground were done so without our knowledge or approval.”

“For the record, the pictures wouldn’t have been permitted to be taken, had we known, and the issue will be dealt with privately by the Club.”

“The Club has adopted a neutral position on many matters with a political dimension and intends to continue to do so going forward.”

“The Club also acknowledge that everyone is entitled to their own opinion, whether that be employees or supporters but would also highlight that an individual view cannot be fairly attributed, as the view of everyone or the Club itself.”

Mullin already has 11 goals in just 14 National League matches with the Welsh club this season. The striker also led the league with 26 goals during the 2021/22 campaign. He earned National League Player of the Year this past season. That came in his freshman campaign with the club.

Undoubtedly the most significant signing during the new ownership, Mullin joined the Dragons from Cambridge United in 2021. There is no hinting towards a suspension for Pullin due to the message. The club’s official statement also said that the star will still be an integral part of the team. Wrexham next play Halifax Town on Tuesday.
