Shaun Wright-Phillips has left the Premier League for New York Red Bulls, according to the team’s official website.
After 16 years in England, Wright-Phillips and his brother Bradley have joined the Red Bulls and will be available for selection on Saturday when New York faces Philadelphia Union at PPL Park.
First debuting for Manchester City in 1999, Wright-Phillips won two FA Cups, one Premier League championship, one League Cup and one Community Shield with four different teams including Chelsea and Queens Park Rangers. Over the course of his Premier League career he earned 299 appearances and scored 31 goals.
Red Bulls Head Coach Jesse Marsch said, “Shaun has performed at the highest levels of the game for his entire career, in the Premier League and on the international level, and brings a wealth of talent and experience.
Wright-Phillips made his national team debut for the U-21 team in 2001 before appearing for the senior team in 2004. After weaving in and out of selection, Wright-Phillips was chosen for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa where he appeared as a substitute in two of the team’s group games. The London native has accumulated 36 appearances for the England team and scored 6 goals.
Currently sitting in third place in MLS’s Eastern conference with 29 points, Wright-Phillips can make an immediate impact as the Red Bulls head into mid-season and look to continue their winning as the playoffs get closer.
