    CF Montréal History

Montréal is one the MLS clubs that actually predates MLS itself. The club was founded as the Montréal Impact in 1992 and began play in 1993, as a member of the American Professional Soccer League (today known as USL).

As a division two side, Montréal won the regular season five times over the years, and the league playoff title three times. Notably, during this era Montréal won the first ever official Canadian Championship in 2008. They also advanced to the quarterfinals of CONCACAF Champions League – defeating Liga MX’s Atlante 2-0 in the first leg but losing 5-4 on aggregate.

The Impact would join the NASL exodus from USL in 2011, and play one season in the league before moving up to MLS in 2012.

As an MLS side, Montréal has won the Canadian Championship four more times, but has had less-than-stellar results in the league.

In 2021, Montréal abandoned the Impact name and rebranded to “Club de Foot Montréal”, complete with a new logo. After supporter backlash, as of 2023 the name was officially shortened to “CF Montréal”. A revised badge was also introduced that is closer to the old Impact logos.

Since 2008 the club has played at Stade Saputo. When weather necessitates playing indoors, or for bigger matches, the team plays at the neighboring Olympic Stadium. Stade Saputo is named for the dairy company Saputo Inc., which is turn is named for the Saputo family. Joey Saputo is the club’s owner, and also is chairman of Italy’s Bologna FC 1909.
