Most-watched soccer games on US TV for October 9-21, 2019

NBCSN’s Sunday broadcast of Manchester United against Liverpool produced a Total Audience Delivery of 763,000, making it the most-watched Premier League match on cable since September 1. A total of 697,000 viewers watched the match on NBCSN proper, making it the most-watched soccer match on cable during the month of October. Legal streaming of the match made up 8.65% of the total viewing audience for the game.

The National Women’s Soccer League playoff semi-finals averaged 128.500 viewers on ESPN2 last Sunday, up 24.8% from 103,000 for the semi-final round on Lifetime in 2017. North Carolina Courage’s 4-1 victory over Reign FC drew 34,000 more viewers than the MLS playoff match between Philadelphia Union and New York Red Bulls on FOX Sports 1, the MLS match kicked off at half time of the Courage/Reign match.

The six matches of the MLS Cup playoffs first round averaged just 195,500 viewers on English-language television, down 14.1% from comparable matches last season. ESPN’s broadcast featuring Minnesota United and Los Angeles Galaxy averaged 317,000 viewers, more than any first round match on English-language television since at least 2012.

Meanwhile, TNT’s coverage of UEFA Champions League Group Stage is averaging 212,000 viewers, which is the best in more than a decade through Matchday 3 – and +8% better than last year. Following a record-setting first year, TNT’s overall second season of Champions League coverage has continued to deliver strong results, with viewership up 5% – including Playoffs – compared to 2018.
