Vermaelen set for Barcelona after Man United end interest

Defender Thomas Vermaelen is set for a move to Barcelona following the news that Manchester United have ended their interest in the player.

Reports coming from England are saying Arsenal wanted Chris Smalling as part of the deal for the Belgium international, but United refused that request and withdrew from the transfer.

Now, the 28-year-old defender is clear to join Spanish giants Barcelona in a deal that will be worth around £15 million. Speculation in the media is that the transfer will be completed over the weekend.

Vermaelen battled form and fitness last season while making 21 appearances for the Gunners. The defender fell out of favor with Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger and has been rumored to be on his way out of the Emirates for most of this summer.

Should Barcelona complete the move as expected, Vermaelen should provide the La Liga club some relief in central defence following the retirement of longtime servant, Carles Puyol.
