As Franco Mastantuono continues his preseason training at Real Madrid’s Valdebebas facility, a behind-the-scenes decision from before his move to Europe has come to light. The young Argentine star reportedly turned down representation by Jorge Mendes, former agent of Cristiano Ronaldo.
According to Diario Sport, Mastantuono made the decision driven by loyalty. Despite Mendes trying to lure him away during a heated battle between PSG and Real Madrid for his signature, the midfielder remained loyal to his current agents, Federico Vitale and Walter Tamer.
While Mendes promised riches and a guaranteed elite career in Europe, Mastantuono never seriously considered switching agencies or sharing an agent with CR7. There were only brief conversations — and no real intention from the player’s side.
Jorge Mendes is widely known for building an empire in the world of soccer representation. His agency has represented hundreds of players across the globe — including top Premier League clubs like Wolverhampton, where he’s had a major influence on transfer strategy.
Mendes is now one of the key figures tied to Saudi Arabian soccer, orchestrating major-money moves such as Joao Félix’s career path. But Mastantuono made it clear: he wasn’t interested in being part of that client portfolio.

For now, the focus is on Mastantuono’s debut, which could come as early as August 19 at the Santiago Bernabéu against Osasuna. Real Madrid recently assigned squad numbers for the upcoming season, with Gonzalo García taking the iconic No. 9 jersey once earmarked for Kylian Mbappé. That leaves Mastantuono with No. 25 for now — a number recently worn by players like Eduardo Camavinga and Vinícius Jr. He’ll begin full training with the squad on his 18th birthday.
Xabi Alonso’s first major test: Strengthening Real Madrid’s defense
As Real Madrid kicks off a new era under Xabi Alonso, one thing is clear: fixing the defense is priority No. 1. The team just finished its worst defensive season since 1998, conceding over 82 goals in all competitions. Even in 2025 alone, they’ve already allowed 55 goals in 42 matches — a glaring issue for a club loaded with attacking talent but lacking solidity at the back.

Criticism toward players like Vinícius Jr. and Kylian Mbappé for their defensive work rate isn’t unwarranted. And despite this, the club is unlikely to bring in new defenders unless there’s a major shift. Only Rodrygo or Dani Ceballos may be on their way out before the summer window closes — a window that’s been the fourth-most expensive under Florentino Pérez’s presidency.
In that context, Mastantuono — whose transfer cost close to €45 million — is more than just a promising prospect. He represents a key part of Madrid’s future.
