The Followtonians Podcast needs to be on this board. Two Evertonians, one in Kansas, the other in Merseyside talking all things Everton with current and former Everton greats. They’ve interviewed Graeme Sharp, Adrian Heath, Tim Howard and Landon Donovan to name a few.

On our Facebook page I have posted a request asking people not to cheat -if we are to win this then we want to win it fair and square. But you must understand we cannot be responsible for what people say they are doing because they may be trying to get us disqualified. Also I would like to disspell any myths about our podcast. We do not get paid, it is not scripted, there is no media juggernaut behind us, we do not get free tickets. It’s just three blokes getting together talking about the Arsenal – that’s it plus of course Chris, our producer who does all the tech stuff.

Can I just say that some of the swipes being taken at EPL Talk/the Gaffer here are getting a little petty? I listened to “It’s Up for Grabs Now” quite regularly and was equally a little disoriented when they changed their name, it’s understandable that someone who isn’t a die-hard listener may not be familiar with their new tag.

Regardless of who we all think should be/shouldn’t be in a category, this is a good competition and exposes visitors and regulars to this site to a lot of different podcasts and perspectives on the Premiership. Good on the EPL Talk team for creating these awards for the last several years…

I’m am a bit surprised at the defensive responses. Epltalk’s website and podcast focuses on a sport based in the UK (what’s that E stand for?), so coming out and proclaiming ignorance of media that is also based in the UK does not really promote your credibility. I would recommend a little “thanks for the suggestion,” and move on. As the author of what seems to be an incomplete list of favorite podcast, I would ask WHO else should the onus be on?

I’d like to type/speak up on behalf of Arsenal Review USA.
In short, as an American EPL follower, I feel that the Arsenal Review guys really do present a new angle. At the same time, they do an excellent job of broadcasting various speakers and views without any steamrolling…I get a little tired of other podcasts that feature the same speakers over and over without room for different voices. That said, I haven’t listened to any of the non-Arsenal podcasts on the list. (and I probably won’t!)

  31. Gooner Gareth

The Tuesday Club is by far the best podcast out there. Mr Gaffer, I urge you to listen to it from the start when it was “Up For Grabs Now”, in particular the episode “The Shawcross Redemption”. That episode alone is deserving of an all-time award on this site. I realise I am a Gooner and, as such, have a biased view but this podcast is done by four mates who have varied degrees of fame but mates nonetheless, who get together and share their uber-passion for Arsenal and football in general. Most of the time they are ribbing their own players and that is possibly why it is loved by fans of other clubs as well. Thank you to Alan, Tayo, Keith and Ian for a top podcast.

Just so you know, we weren’t actually aware that there was a competition for best club podcast until someone on our Facebook page mentioned it. That just started people voting for us. We’ve had nothing to do with it. Having said that, we’re happy that people are voting for us. As for this massive media juggernaut that we’ve organised to get votes for the pod, no-one’s told us. We go round to Chris our engineers house, talk shit about Arsenal for forty five minutes and then go and get a cup of tea. It’s posted on itunes a few hours later and people download it if they like it. That, truly, is it. Also, I think we’ve done around forty shows (including the original Up For Grabs incarnation) and my earnings so far have been zero. And when you minus bus, train and cab fares and drinks afterwards, i think i’m down a fair few quid. And the same goes for the others. We do it cos we love the Arsenal. Even if the last few weeks of the season have made that more difficult.

The big question is why was the Tuesday club left off in the first place ? also why no nomination for best presenter etc. Its a great podcast, good to see it up there

    • The Gaffer

      May 4, 2011 at 6:24 am

Big Dave, until a couple of days ago I had never heard of The Tuesday Club. And I’ve been following the sport and the media surrounding it religiously for many years. The Tuesday Club may be a good podcast (I’ve never heard an episode), but they do an awful job at promoting themselves and an awful job at reaching out to the soccer community to tell people they exist. Other than a podcast page, I don’t see them even having a website unless I’m mistaken?

      The Gaffer

      • Andrew Chrysostom

        May 4, 2011 at 6:53 am

to be fair, it’s because they’re not professional podcasters – they have no social media/online team, just a producer.

they do the pod because of their fanbase, and are ex-playback so are used to others promoting them (which imo makes their popularity all about their content, NOT their promotion strategy). they have no website, as they have no need for one – their FB presence acts as a forum (which is desirable, as noone in the setup has the time to set up/manage a forum) and they’re earning nowt from it!

their only promotion is their continued success via iTunes. they keep it on the pitch.

        • The Gaffer

          May 4, 2011 at 7:02 am

Andrew, I’m sure it’s a good podcast, but because they have no social media/online team is no excuse. Almost all of the other podcasts that are nominated in the same category have no support team. Most of the other podcasters earn nothing for doing their shows. Facebook promotion is one thing but it should be a part of the entire marketing they do, not everything.

The Tuesday Club need more people like you Andrew who are promoting the show.

A bit rich that you’re advising the Tuesday Club on how to market themselves when they’re the top performing Podcast on iTunes, surely a pretty accurate barometer of success.

Also the fact that you’ve never heard of them (again, they’re consistently the top performing fan-cast on iTunes) probably says more about your grip things than the Tuesday club and their success or otherwise in promoting themselves.

            • The Gaffer

              May 4, 2011 at 9:01 am

Barry, The Tuesday Club may be high up on the iTunes charts in the UK, but I don’t see them on the US iTunes charts at all (at least not in the top 100). If you’re an Arsenal fan, you probably know about them. If you’re not, they’re practically invisible (until now). I guess it’s a good thing we have the awards so people can know that the show exists (as well as many others).

They are the 7th most downloaded podcast on iTunes with 40,000, yes FORTY THOUSAND listeners.

The second most downloaded sports podcast behind the Guardian’s Football Weekly. If you haven’t heard of it then it the onus is on YOU, not them.

              May 5, 2011 at 6:16 am

Why is the onus on me? If many Arsenal supporters don’t know the podcast exists, don’t you think they should do a better job at marketing themselves?

it makes no sense to keep mentioning the idea of ‘marketing’ themselves.

the podcast is UNSPONSORED – meaning that the content can remain 100% uncompromised and they are allowed to say whatever they want.

because of this, the hosts are UNPAID – meaning that the whole operation has no revenue. because of this, the only marketing which they can afford is through social media…given they don’t have webmaster skill-sets or the time (or desire) to write a blog, they are utilising the best social media which is available to them (to a great effect, as shown by the overwhelming support shown on here).

they have a following in the US (bay area gooners are the only association i know to formally support), but they shouldn’t be persecuted for just putting out their podcast and using facebook/twitter.

Why aren’t you persecuting them? There’s all sorts of talk about how you can vote multiple times on their facebook page and get away with it.

Not really fair to the enthusiastic amateur fans who podcast for the love of it when a TV star is streaking ahead because his big fan group is sharing tips on how to game this poll.

Oh goody, Playback Media has multiple podcasts on this list.

In future it might be a good idea to have a “fan-produced” podcast category, or at least something to distinguish podcasts created by unpaid, “ordinary” people from professionally produced and promoted shows. Just sayin’…

We need to vote for the podcasts that don’t have a media juggernaut behind them.

Media juggernaut behind them’? Alan Davies and co record the Tuesday club in his Kitchen! and while they may be professional comedians, thats not why we listen to them, or why the record it. Highly unfair to single out Roker Report, I do apologize for the fact Roker Report and Sunderland may actually have fans who think the show is good, despite the fact it doesn’t have a name host or professional backing.

Ahaha I just threw that particular podcast title out there, apologies for any offense taken…

For what it’s worth I’m more partial to those shows that don’t have professional backing, as I stated in my initial post. After all, the comedians on Tuesday Club probably do about 1/10 of the work the Arseblogger does producing the Arsecast, which, like a lot of the other podcasts on here, probably involves a lot of time spent by unpaid people in the pre-production, production and post-production processes. The Tuesday Club blokes are funny but you get the feeling they only devote as much time to the production as it takes them to finish 1-2 pints…

The Tuesday Club needs to be on the shortlist – Footballistically Arsenal is alright but The Tuesday Club beats it hands down for passion and humor

    May 3, 2011 at 8:47 am

It’s nice to see some of the ‘smaller’ shows on here (The Roker Report, Arsenal Review USA, MP Red). The shows that don’t have a celebrity push behind them or a media company that does all the post production for them. Sure, they probably won’t win but they deserve to be recognized.

    Where is the Tuesday club?

I just voted for Footballisticly cos I do enjoy it and I do look forward to it but I love Tuesday Club. Some of Alan’s rants are genius (don’t listen when at the gym as laughing hard and heavy weights don’t mix) and no I’m nor a spammer. I haven’t heard of this vote via Tuedsay Club

It’s almost like this is ‘Best Arsenal Podcast’ not ‘Best Club Podcast’… I hope any of the other ones win.

Tuesday club not here? Well then this is a farce

    May 3, 2011 at 7:17 am

I doubt it’s spam, I came here through a footballisticly arsenal tweet, and I am shocked that the tuesday club is not on that list.

I listen to both and I’m sure anyone who has—listened to both podcasts—will agree that tuesday club is better than it’s replacement on playback media.

On another note 4 from the 11 podcasts are from playback media hmm…

    • Westie

      May 3, 2011 at 11:16 am

I think Playback have 4 of 11 here because they make about 10 club podcasts, all of a high standard. I think they started the Davies one too.

Having said that, my favourite (which is also one if theirs!) is the Man Utd Redcast which hasn’t made the list either. I could blame anti-Red bias, jealousy, trophy envy and so on, but I won’t. I’ll settle for winning the League instead!

Well of course it’s your favourite you red nose

    May 3, 2011 at 7:16 am

@Andrew, I agree it’s got a following but it wasn’t from scratch. They continued the ‘grabs’ show under a new name and invited all the people from that group to join. About half did.

@Dude and Tate, this is just my opinion. TC is as good ‘grabs’ at it’s median, but ‘grabs’ had a few all time greats, real classic performances and TC hasn’t yet.

I think they’ve got this poll right (though maybe there’s one too many Spurs in there!)

it’s hardly ‘spamming’ – i feel that the podcast should have some sort of public representation in it’s absence. ‘footballistically arsenal’ wasn’t around at the beginning of the season either, and imo isn’t anywhere near as funny.

the best pod was with rosenthal and whitehall (without the 2 regulars). it’s usually 40 mins of complaining about poor performances, which doesn’t make a great podcast for me.

but i do like hearing people who can articulate themselves about arsenal, so i listen nonetheless. you just need to look at the social media presence generated from alan davies and co – with endless promotion, footballistically arsenal have 700ish followers, where the tuesday club have over 4,000 (from scratch).

it’s genuinely a good listen for the neutral too, with a proportion of subscribers not being arsenal fans.

    • Westie

      May 3, 2011 at 11:21 am

Isn’t this a vote for podcasts, not social media presence?
Otherwise Footballistically’s 7500 on Twitter would count for something?

      • Andrew Chrysostom

        May 3, 2011 at 12:51 pm

technically you’re wrong as they rebranded the ‘up for grabs’ twitter account, which already had approx 7,000 followers.

  54. Dirk Diggler

    May 3, 2011 at 6:40 am

I see that Tuesday Club has been spamming their listener in protest..!

To be fair it’s the second best arsenal podcast now. They sort of lost it when they stopped ‘its up for grabs now’.

    • D Tate

      May 3, 2011 at 6:45 am

How exactly? It’s the exact same show, same people, same length of time, same topics, same everything except the name……..

    • Gunner Dude

      May 3, 2011 at 6:49 am

They lost it? Its the same bloody people just a different name. Don’t think you have to be a rocket scientist to get that glaring fact right.

    • wandarah

      May 4, 2011 at 6:17 am

Mate, you’re thinking of ‘Footballistically Arsenal’ – they constantly want people to join facebook, twitter, etc, etc, etc.

That’s what ‘It’s up for grabs now’ turned into from a technical perspetive.

All the actual members of ‘It’s up for Grabs now’ launched an entirely new podcast called ‘The Tuesday Club’

The Tuesday Club not on this list? I’m more than slightly annoyed but I kind of understand it if this voting is based on the podcast of 2010-11. And The Tuesday Club/Alan Davies only reemerged in January. Still beats the hell out of these lot in such a short span. By far the best podcast out there, I eagerly await the new shows every week.

The Tuesday Club beats all of these. Easily. I mean come on…..Footballistically Arsenal?! Its crap!

The Tuesday club needs to be on here, it was previously called “It’s up for grabs now”. Since its relaunch some months ago, it has reguarly featured at or near the top of its genre on i-tunes. I look forward to each new podcast

I agree, it’s the best club podcast by miles, Alan Davies is brilliant!
Arsenal review USA? No offense to those guys they do a decent job, but I can name 5 Arsenal podcasts off the top of my head that are better than that one.

The top 5 in my opinion are in this order: Tuesday Club, Arseblog, Footballistically Arsenal, the Onine Gooner Podcast, and the Fan’s Forum with Tom Watt.
Other than that good job on the lists, their very thorough.

It is an Arsenal podcast hosted by Alan Davies, comedian Ian Stone, DJ Tayo and Keith Dover. It used to be ‘Its Up For Grabs Now’ before its current reincarnation. Its the best podcast out there and has a lot of non-Arsenal listeners as well. Links below.

I agree mate. Popular even with Tottenhammers, Liverpudlians and all around the world too. You’re missing out.

Alan Davies’s podcast, it used to be called ‘It’s Up For Grabs Now!’
Kind of like the Spurs show where even if your not a fan of the club you’d still enjoy it.
