Apple TV+ has announced a new documentary series surrounding the European Super League. “Super League: The War for Football” debuts on the streaming service beginning January 13, 2023. The four-part series documents the debacle around the failed formation of the league in April of 2021.

Along with explaining the now infamous situation, the series features league presidents, club owners, and even the organizers at the heart of The Super League. Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Jeff Zimbalist is the director. The Last Dance producer Connor Schell is also on the staff for this documentary.

Apple TV+ documentary leads into future of European Super League

The Super League was a proposed soccer competition featuring the top teams in Europe. Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Juventus, Manchester City, Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, AC Milan, and Inter Milan all initially agreed to join the league. Nevertheless, fans from all over the continent fumed, especially in England. Quickly, clubs backed out of the plans.

While the league failed, organizers have kept hope alive. Bernd Reichart, an executive with the European Super League (ESL), claimed there are musings over a new format in the league. “There is a reassessment. There is a clearly stated move towards an open format and that permanent membership is off the table,” Reichart said. “We want to see whether or not there is broader consensus about the problems facing European football.”

Three teams still remain in plans

Barca, Real Madrid, and Juventus have also never officially withdrawn from the plans as well. In fact, ESL organizers are currently in a legal battle with UEFA regarding the formation. While an official ruling on the case won’t come until the spring, there will be big news coming on Thursday. A 50-page report on the case is set to be released. It could influence any final verdict.
