WPS Opener Should Be Spectacular

The inaugural WPS season opens tonight in Los Angeles as the Sol play host to the Washington Freedom. Marta is the star attraction no doubt, as arguably the greatest female footballer on the planet touches down on American soil. But this match like so many others to come in the WPS will pit two evenly matches sides against each other.

Aya Miyama is a good passer and she will likely team up with Marta to provide some spectacular moments for the Sol. Aly Wagner and Shannon Boxx also will feature in the Sol’s midfield.

The Freedom counter with US legend Brianna Scurry in goal. For the skeptics who point out the disastrous finish to the 2007 World Cup when Scurry was placed in goal for the semifinal in place of Hope Solo by then coach Greg Ryan,  you cannot forget Scurry’s great legacy as a keeper for the US. Abby Wambach whose injury was thought to be a killer for the US Olympic Team in 2008 stars in the midfield for the Freedom. Kat Whitehill leads the defense.

The match will be aired on Fox Soccer Channel at 6pm ET/3pm PT and it is important for all supporters of the beautiful game in the US to at least tune in for this first match which will be Nielson rated.
