Sunday's Bundesliga Review: Cicero Spares Wolfsburg's Blushes

Hugo Hits Three As Werder Bremen Win.

Werder Bremen and Wolfsburg were both under pressure to pick up three points in their respective fixtures after their rivals all did the business on Saturday. Unfortunately, only Werder Bremen were able to grab the desired result, which leaves Wolfsburg struggling. Here are the results.

Werder Bremen 3 – 0 St. Pauli

That’s more like it from Werder Bremen. They so easily could have done a Schalke and lost here, but instead they regrouped and got the result they would have been hoping for and it’s about time too. Hugo Almeida stole the headlines with a wonderful hat-trick, and Schaaf will certainly want to keep hold of the Portuguese hitman. Still, after such an awesome performance, Almeida received his marching orders after an elbow on Carlos Zambrano. I think that’s a three match suspension, so it’s not all good news for Werder Bremen after this result. The win lifts the hosts to 11th in the Bundesliga table, but it’s at least one step closer to where they hope to finish at the end of the season. If they can use this result as a springboard, then the sky is the limit. St. Pauli will be disappointed with the loss, and even more disappointed with Markus Thorandt, who was also sent off with minutes left after a bad challenge on Frings. They’ll need to get it together or they’ll dig themselves into the drop zone.

FC Koln 1 – 1 VfL Wolfsburg

Koln really should have won this game. Mato Jajalo spurned a few guilt-edged chances that could have put the result beyond a doubt for Koln, and that’s something he’ll really need to work on in training. Novakovic opened the scoring in the second half after Petit’s rocket free-kick was parried by Wolfsburg goalkeeper Diego Benaglio into the path of the big Slovakian, who simply nodded past the Swiss number one. Wolfsburg’s equalizer came in fantastic fashion from substitute Cicero, who scored an excellent bicycle kick just a minute or so after entering the fray. It was a disappointing match, though, and it’s a fixture that Wolfsburg fans would have pencilled a big three next to at the start of the season. Things still aren’t going their way, and there’s definitely still lots of room for improvement. Wolfsburg lose ground of their Bundesliga rivals after this result, and are a whopping ten points short of a Champions League spot.
