Brazilian news outlet Folha de Sao Paulo is claiming that soccer superstar Pelé is not responding to chemotherapy treatment. Because the harsh treatment is now not working, doctors have reportedly began palliative care on the Brazilian.

The former Brazil international has been dealing with intestinal cancer since September of 2021.

Initial chemotherapy appeared to be doing its job; however, scans at the beginning of the year showed new cancerous growth spreading to Pelé’s liver and lungs.

Star has been receiving regular treatment

Pelé, 82, has been in the hospital since November 29th. He last posted on Instagram on Thursday regarding a tribute from Qatar. Buildings were illuminated in Doha with the former player’s face along with a get well soon message.

“Friends, I am at the hospital making my monthly visit,” said Pelé. “It’s always nice to receive positive messages like this. Thanks to Qatar for this tribute and to everyone who sends me good vibes!”

New strategy helps manage pain

Palliative care is intended for patients dealing with life-threatening illnesses who are not responding to intense treatment.

According to the aforementioned report, Pelé will not be receiving anymore invasive surgery. Instead, the new treatment will help alleviate any pain and help the former player be more comfortable during his end-of-life care.

Players have taken to Twitter to issue their support for the legend. France’s Kylian Mbappe and Rivaldinho, son of former Brazil star Rivaldo, both tweeted “Pray for the King” early Saturday morning.

Official reports suggested that Pelé previously went to the hospital because of respiratory infection.

The antibiotic treatment supposedly helped the superstar. Initial word was that Pelé responded to the medicine “with a general improvement in his state of health.” Nevertheless, Pelé’s condition has worsened in recent days.

Pelé is widely regarded as the greatest soccer player of all time.

The forward collected three World Cup trophies with Brazil and was even voted as the FIFA Football Player of the Century.
