Kylian Mbappé is now officially Real Madrid’s new No. 10. After a debut season filled with high expectations and mixed results, the French superstar has taken a major symbolic step at the club. Although he only lifted two minor trophies— the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup—Mbappé’s individual numbers were outstanding: 44 goals in 59 matches.

When he joined Real Madrid, the No. 7 shirt was already owned by Vinicius Jr., and the No. 10 was held by club legend Luka Modric. Now, with Modric having left the club this summer, Mbappé has claimed the number he wears for the French national team.

The French striker’s new jersey number is already reflected on Real Madrid’s official website, and fans can purchase his shirt with the No. 10 on the back. This number holds legendary status at the club. Mbappé now follows in the footsteps of iconic players like Luka Modric, Luís Figo, Clarence Seedorf, Mesut Özil, Michael Laudrup, Héctor Rial, Ferenc Puskás, and Velázquez.

What about the No. 9?

With Mbappé giving up the No. 9, that shirt is now vacant. Endrick, the rising Brazilian star currently wearing No. 16, is a prime candidate to inherit it. However, academy talent Gonzalo García may also be in the running. He’s negotiating with the club to stay in the first team and could end up with either the No. 9 or the No. 16 if Endrick makes the switch.

Besides the No. 9, only No. 25 remains unassigned—this number can only be used if all regular squad numbers are taken, and usually by a field player under special circumstances.

The No. 17, recently vacated by Lucas Vázquez, has now been given to Asencio, who’s been officially registered as a full first-team player with LaLiga.

Attention now turns to any possible new signings and the jersey number for Franco Mastantuono, who will join the squad officially on August 14, once he turns 18. His number assignment is still pending and could be one of the final pieces in Real Madrid’s evolving squad for the 2025/26 season.
