Liverpool Win Against Chelsea Conjures Up Memories Of Golden Period

Christopher Harris

Liverpool’s display Sunday in their historic 1-0 win at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea reminded me of the classic Liverpool side from the late seventies and early eighties. The link-up play between Xabi Alonso, Steven Gerrard, Robbie Keane, Dirk Kuyt (and later Ryan Babel) was incredible up front, showing off a ton of creativity that was reminiscent of the way that Ray Kennedy, Graeme Souness, Terry McDermott and Kenny Dalglish used to link up.

Congratulations to the Reds on a well deserved win. Rafa Benitez’s team has finally walked the walk after talking the talk for so long. Now, after beating Man United and Chelsea, they have to keep that level of consistency going for the rest of the season. If they can, we may have a real tight race between four teams at the top of the table instead of just two.

Here’s a video I unearthed from the 1978 European Cup win by Liverpool against Bruges. Enjoy.
