Lionel Messi has begun his preparation for the 2026 World Cup on the wrong foot after suffering an injury during Inter Miami’s preseason. However, his outlook for the tournament has taken another hit, with head coach Lionel Scaloni reportedly growing concerned about Argentina’s players.

News broke Wednesday when Inter Miami announced that Messi sustained a muscle injury during a friendly against Barcelona SC ahead of the 2026 MLS season. With planning already underway, though, concern has reportedly extended beyond Messi to the rest of the Albiceleste squad.

According to ESPN’s Esteban Edul, there is significant concern within the national team’s coaching staff led by Scaloni regarding the form of Argentina’s players. As the journalist reported, the staff believes that “individually, each player is performing well below what they are capable of.

Among the players expected to be starters at the 2026 World Cup, only two have stood out for their strong form. The main positives have been Enzo Fernández, who is enjoying an excellent stretch with 11 goals in 38 matches (his best season at Chelsea) and Lisandro Martínez, who has proven vital to Manchester United’s resurgence since returning from his ACL injury.

What about the rest of Argentina’s players?

Among the projected starters, only Fernández and Martínez are currently viewed as being in top form. Others who could be added to that list include Emiliano “Dibu” Martínez, a key figure for an Aston Villa side currently sitting third in the Premier League, and Lautaro Martínez, Inter Milan’s leader and Serie A’s top scorer with 14 goals.

However, concerns have reportedly been raised about the level of several regular starters, including right back Nahuel Molina, left back Nicolás Tagliafico, midfielders Alexis Mac Allister and Rodrigo De Paul (who has yet to start the 2026 season with Inter Miami) and Julián Álvarez. Despite their status as World Cup champions, the 2025-26 campaign has not been especially promising for what is expected to be Argentina’s starting lineup.

World Cup preparation already underway in Argentina

Even though he has been reluctant to confirm his participation, the 2026 World Cup remains Lionel Messi’s primary objective in the twilight of his career. While Inter Miami has indicated that his injury appears to be minor, reports suggest that the decision to postpone Friday’s match against Independiente del Valle, aside from contractual factors, was also meant to avoid exposing the Argentine star to unnecessary risk.

Earlier this year, Lionel Scaloni revealed that he spoke with Messi to discuss planning for the World Cup. In late January, the Argentina boss also met with Atletico Madrid coaching staff and players Juan Musso, Thiago Almada, Nicolás González, and Julián Álvarez, with Nahuel Molina and Giuliano Simeone absent from a team dinner but still part of preparations that began six months before the World Cup kickoff.
