A year after Columbus Crew‘s memorable title win over LAFC at Lower.com Field, the Leagues Cup returns in 2025 with major changes. Here’s everything you need to know about this revamped edition.

The biggest change: only the top 18 MLS teams will participate, while all Liga MX teams will once again be involved. The 36 teams are split into two regional groups, East and West, for the first stage.

Each team will play three group-stage matches, with MLS clubs facing three Liga MX opponents, and vice versa. To qualify for the knockout rounds, teams must finish among the top four from their respective leagues, based on points.

Those eight teams will advance to the quarterfinals, where the top Liga MX team will face the fourth-best MLS team (MEX 1 vs. MLS 4), and so on. The top three finishers—champion, runner-up, and third place—will qualify for the 2026 Concacaf Champions Cup.
