The Istanbul derby between Besiktas and Galatasaray was abandoned Sunday after Besiktas fans invaded the pitch in the 92nd minute with their team losing 2-1 to Galatasaray.
Dozens of Besiktas fans ran on the pitch and began throwing chairs at the Atatürk Olympic Stadium. The referee stopped the match and sent the two teams to the locker room. The referee then made the decision to abandon the match.
According to the Hurriyet Daily News, “A scuffle broke out between supporters and security personnel after Galatasaray’s midfielder, Felipe Melo, was booked with a red card in the 92nd minute. Police fired tear gas to disperse the supporters on the field.”
The match between Besiktas and Galatasaray had gotten off to a good start, with a record Turkish attendance of 76,127. Besiktas plays its derby games at the Turkish national stadium, Atatürk Olympic Stadium, although away supporters are not allowed to attend derby matches.
Galatasaray were in front in the game 2-1 after two goals by Didier Drogba.
The Turkish Football Federation will now have to decide what will happen regarding the match — whether they’ll force a replay, fine Besiktas for failing to control their fans, or award a victory to Galatasaray.
