The France national team is entering a rebuilding phase as they set their sights on the 2026 World Cup following a disappointing EURO 2024 campaign. Coach Didier Deschamps is aiming to recreate the success of his 2018 squad, but he has reportedly identified a significant challenge in Antoine Griezmann‘s replacement.

In September 2024, Griezmann, at the age of 33, announced his retirement from international soccer. The Atletico Madrid star’s decision caught many by surprise, particularly since he had been a pivotal figure in Deschamps’ era and had expressed his desire to be part of the 2026 World Cup squad.

As L’Equipe reports, Deschamps has called up several promising young talents to secure the future of the team, with Michael Olise expected to fill Griezmann’s shoes. However, a major challenge could impede Olise’s integration into the team.

Language barrier: A hurdle for Olise’s adaptation

Born in London to a Nigerian father and French-Algerian mother, Olise chose to represent France despite spending his youth in England. Though he has played for France’s youth teams, he has faced challenges with the language, which may complicate his transition into the senior squad.

Deschamps, who has high expectations for Olise, believes the 22-year-old can be a cornerstone of the team’s future. His recent move to Bayern Munich has allowed him more first-team opportunities, boosting his international profile.

However, communication remains a hurdle, as evidenced by his difficulties during his first press conference as a senior player for France. The language barrier, coupled with Olise’s naturally reserved personality, has raised concerns about how quickly he can fully integrate into Deschamps’ tactical system.

Despite these challenges, Olise has already made a significant impact for France. He secured his third start in a crucial Nations League quarterfinal against Croatia, contributing a goal and an assist to help France secure their place in the Final Four.

Olise also scored a stunning free-kick in the 52nd minute of that match, becoming the first French player since Paul Pogba in March 2018 to score a free-kick. As his status continues to rise within the national team, improving his communication skills will be vital for his long-term development and success.
