Despite numerous inconsistencies, Real Madrid have managed to remain competitive in both LaLiga and the UEFA Champions League. Nevertheless, coach Álvaro Arbeloa faces the most difficult challenge of the season, as he goes up against Bayern Munich in the quarterfinals. Although he has recovered Kylian Mbappé, he has the difficult absence of Thibaut Courtois, forcing him to make drastic changes to the starting lineup.

Thibaut Courtois has been diagnosed with a muscle injury in the rectus femoris of his right quadriceps after the game vs. Manchester City in the Champions League. With this, he will be absent for both legs against Bayern Munich, as he will be out for around a month. In his absence, Real Madrid will lose one of the most decisive players of recent years, posing a challenge in reaching the semifinals.

Throughout his career with Los Blancos, the Belgian has established as a difference-maker, being key in the last two Champions League titles. Although he does not have outstanding footwork, Courtois is one of the best shot-stoppers in the world, even entering the conversation of the greatest goalkeepers in history. Because of this, coach Arbeloa will have a difficult challenge in replacing his absence.

In his place, Andriy Lunin will position as Real Madrid’s starting goalkeeper, looking to establish himself and compete for the starting role. Despite having limited playing time, the Ukrainian has shown he can rise to the occasion, even becoming a protagonist in previous editions of the competition. Nevertheless, he does not manage to reach the same level of saves as the Belgian, making it a massive challenge.

While he does not have a lot of playing time, the Ukrainian earned his spot as Courtois’ backup, playing key roles on several occasions, such as in the 2023–24 Champions League, delivering a stellar performance against Manchester City. Nevertheless, he faces another difficult challenge with Los Blancos, as he looks to compete for the starting role.

In addition, he is coming off conceding four goals in the last two matches.
