Police in Sao Paulo fired off tear gas to break up a small group of protesters walking to Corinthians Stadium where the opening ceremony will occur in a few hours.

While the most of the globe is concerned about the World Cup opening match, many Brazilians are upset that the tournament is even taking place on their soil. This is due to the $11 billion spent to prepare for the World Cup while the people are desperate for to decrease the gap between the wealthy and poor, better schools, healthcare, transportation and several other issues. While Brazil hosts host the festivities for a month, FIFA takes most of the revenue, hence making matter worse for the Brazilian people. Also, some stadiums that were built, like the one in Manaus, will be useless afterwards, gather dust and remain a reminder of the waste the government has been producing.

Last year, over a million people protested across the country requesting an improvement on public services while highlighting corruption and the expenses of the World Cup during the Confederations Cup. In the process today, at least one protester was arrested and a CNN reporter was injured.

The uproar will only get louder as the tournament commences today and while we will all enjoy the the games occurring throughout the month, let us not forget the social strife most Brazilians will go through during and after the attention leaves their country.
