United's injury woes: When will Yoro and Hojlund return?

In a striking move, Manchester United outmaneuvered Real Madrid to secure the signing of French defender Leny Yoro from Lille. The deal, valued at $78 million, marks one of the significant investments by United in recent years. This acquisition surprised many; especially since United was the primary competition for Real Madrid, a club known for attracting top young talent.

Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain also showed interest in Yoro. However, the Reds withdrew their bid after Yoro agreed to terms with Real Madrid. PSG, on the other hand, opted not to match United’s offer after conducting medical tests on Yoro. That way, they discovered a potential weakness in his metatarsal. This medical concern deterred the French side, leaving the path clear for Manchester United to proceed with their substantial offer.

But Manchester United’s optimism quickly turned to concern as Yoro suffered a metatarsal injury during a pre-season friendly against Arsenal. The injury, occurring just after the Frenchman’s high-profile transfer, would sideline him for three months. This setback came as a significant blow; especially considering the hefty investment United made despite the known risks associated with his medical history.

The 18-year-old’s injury surfaced during the 35th minute of the match against Arsenal. After receiving prolonged treatment on the field, he was seen using crutches and wearing a protective boot; signaling the severity of his condition. Despite this, Yoro has chosen to remain with the team during their tour; with further assessments scheduled upon their return to the UK.

Yoro and Hojlund both suffered an injury

Even worse, United have other reasons to worry outside the defender’s ailment. Another important player, Rasmus Hojlund, strained his hamstring in the same game and will likely miss six weeks. The Dane, who scored against Arsenal, initially appeared to have a minor injury but further assessments revealed a more serious issue. It means both Yoro and Hojlund will miss Premier League matches with their serious injury.

The injury woes continued for United as Marcus Rashford and Antony faced potential setbacks during a subsequent 3-2 victory over Real Betis. Rashford sustained what appeared to be a right ankle injury after a heavy challenge but managed to return for a post-match lap of honor, suggesting the injury might not be severe. Antony, who was substituted due to a hand problem, showed a small scar, but the nature of his injury seemed less critical.

When will the duo be back?

With Yoro’s expected absence until the end of October, Manchester United will face significant challenges in the early stages of the 2024-25 season. Yoro will miss crucial Premier League fixtures, including matches against Liverpool, Tottenham, and Aston Villa. Additionally, he will be unavailable for the start of United’s Europa League and Carabao Cup campaigns.

Manager Erik ten Hag, who attributed the team’s struggles last season to a spate of injuries, now faces a familiar challenge. The timing of these injuries is particularly concerning as United prepares for their Community Shield clash against Manchester City on August 10, followed by the Premier League opener against Fulham on August 16. Hojlund’s absence adds to the pressure, with hopes he can recover in time for the high-stakes match against Liverpool on September 1.

In light of Yoro’s injury, the Red Devils could intensify their efforts to strengthen their defense. They have previously been linked with Bayern Munich’s Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui, as well as Everton center-back Jarrad Branthwaite. The need for robust defensive reinforcements is now more pressing than ever, given the injury crisis afflicting the team.
