Premier League star linked to MLS future alongside Messi: It’s not Kevin De Bruyne

Timo Werner’s latest Premier League excursion appears to be coming to a grinding halt, with Tottenham Hotspur not looking to make his loan move from RB Leipzig permanent at the end of the current season. In this way Werener is linked with a transfer to the MLS where Lionel Messi plays no less.

The 29-year-old Champions League winner has struggled to leave his mark during his sole season with Spurs, scoring just one goal in 27 appearances for Ange Postecoglou’s side before recently being dropped altogether – with his most recent league appearance having come in February.

Now, with his fate with Spurs seemingly sealed, as first reported by Fabrizio Romano, Werner is now on the lookout for a new challenge, with a return to Leipzig also seemingly off the table.

Werner linked with New York Red Bulls

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Werner has already been linked with a move to the New York Red Bulls – another team in the energy drink company’s sporting portfolio, according to Footmercato. With talks between Werner and New York already said to be underway, and with the German under contract with Leipzig for a further season, a simple loan move between the sister clubs could be a quick and painless solution to his dilemma.

This would be following an existing precedent between the clubs, with Emil Forsberg having joined New York from Leipzig ahead of the 2024 season for €3 million. The Swedish international’s move proved a success, having already scored 14 goals and provided three assists in 31 games as the club captain.

Red Bulls already have Bundesliga talent

There, he plays alongside another familiar face to Premier League and Bundesliga fans – forward Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting. The Cameroon forward joined as a free agent in January 2025, having most recently played for Bayern Munich up until the summer of 2024.

While his MLS career is still young, the 36-year-old former Paris Saint-Germain star has already scored three goals in just seven games for New York.

Muller to join Red Bulls?

The Red Bulls are currently eighth in the Eastern Conference after seven games, having gone 3-2-2 under head coach Sandro Schwarz to start the season. But while Werner could provide a welcome boost up front alongside Coupo-Moting, he may not be the only ex-Bundesliga star on the way to the Big Apple.

Bayern and Germany legend Thomas Muller recently confirmed that he is set to leave Bavaria at the conclusion of this season. Following news of his imminent departure, ex-teammate Choupo-Moting was quick to call on the 35-year-old to join him in New York.

Choupo-Moting, who joined the Red Bulls after his Bayern career came to a close in 2024. “He’s welcome here,” he said, according to Kicker via @iMiaSanMia. “Thomas, you already speak English, so…

Jokes aside, I have no idea [what Thomas will do]. Thomas is a Bayern legend, so I’d be happy for him if he continues there. But if he wants to make this step, we’ll see. Thomas, I’m watching you.”
