With less than 100 days until the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup kicks off in the United States, teams are preparing for one of the biggest tournaments in club soccer. Among them is Monterrey, where Spanish legend Sergio Ramos is reportedly pushing for his first signing ahead of the competition, but it’s neither Luka Modric nor Karim Benzema.

Monterrey made waves in the Mexican transfer market by securing Sergio Ramos as a blockbuster signing in early 2025. The veteran center-back, who arrived as a free agent, was brought in to strengthen a squad that finished as runners-up in the 2024 Liga MX Apertura after losing to Club America.

However, Monterrey has endured a slow start to the league, currently sitting ninth in the standings. With coach Martin Demichelis searching for ways to improve ahead of the Club World Cup, Ramos has reportedly stepped in with a special request to boost the squad.

The signing Ramos wants for Monterrey

According to Marca America, Monterrey has inquired about signing Alvaro Fidalgo on loan from Club America. The report, shared via X (formerly Twitter), claims that the Spanish midfielder’s arrival was personally requested by Ramos, who sees him as a key reinforcement for the Club World Cup.

Fidalgo, who made his professional debut for Real Madrid in 2018, featured in just one match before leaving as a free agent. However, he has enjoyed a successful spell at Club America, initially joining on loan from CD Castellon before making his move permanent. With America, he has won three consecutive Liga MX titles and the Champions Cup.

Real Madrid icons Luka Modric and Karim Benzema have both been linked with a potential move to Monterrey, especially as their contracts approach expiration. Reports even emerged from RG Deportiva‘s Willie Gonzalez, claiming that Ramos personally reached out to Benzema to try and convince him to consider a move to Liga MX.

However, following Carlo Ancelotti’s recent comments about Modric, it appears increasingly likely that the Croatian midfielder will sign a new deal with Los Blancos. As for Benzema, his contract with Al-Ittihad, worth $108 million per year, makes a move to Monterrey highly unlikely.
