Manchester United were put on alert last week following reports suggesting that Real Madrid had set their sights on Bruno Fernandes. As part of his mission to rebuild the team, head coach Ruben Amorim addressed the rumors head-on and made his position abundantly clear.

According to the Daily Star, Real Madrid were preparing a $90 million offer for Fernandes, viewing him as a long-term successor to Luka Modric. However, Amorim dismissed the speculation during his press conference on Monday.

No, it’s not going to happen,” Amorim said. “I want Bruno here because one day we want to win the Premier League again. So we want the best players to continue with us. He’s 30, but he’s still so young because he plays 55 games every season. Between assists and goals, he’s there for 30 at least. He’s the type of player we eant here, so he’s not going anywhere,” the coach candidly stated.

Pressed on whether he felt confident about keeping Fernandes despite United’s recent struggles, Amorim pointed to the player’s commitment to the club. “We are in control of the situation. I feel he’s really happy here, specially because he understands what we want to do. He’s one more supporter of Manchester United, he really feels it.

This is the kind of player that we want, and he’s not going anywhere because I already told him,” the coach concluded. Now the captain and creative leader of the squad, Fernandes has recorded 16 goals and 16 assists in 44 appearances this season. Keeping him at Old Trafford would be a significant win for Amorim and the club’s long-term project.

Injury boost for Manchester United

One of Manchester United’s most persistent challenges in recent seasons has been their injury woes—and the 2024-25 campaign has been no different. However, Amorim shared some much-needed optimism during his press conference, offering updates on several key players.

It was not so serious,” Amorim said of Ayden Heaven’s injury. “He is recovering, he’s not ready to play, but he will return this season for sure. Luke (Shaw) is not ready yet. Mason Mount is feeling better but he was on the bench in the last game, Kobbie (Mainoo) is almost ready, Jonny (Evans) is recovering, (Lisandro) Martinez is out. (Harry) Maguire is also ready to go to the game and (Leny) Yoro, yes.”

United had nine first-team players sidelined for the second leg against Real Sociedad, significantly limiting Amorim’s options. Getting key players back will be crucial for the final stretch of the season, particularly as United look to secure a strong finish and potentially winning the Europa League.
