Los Angeles FC have quickly established themselves as one of Major League Soccer’s premier franchises in recent years, attracting big-name signings like Carlos Vela, Olivier Giroud, and Hugo Lloris. With Son Heung-min becoming the club’s latest high-profile addition, the French goalkeeper has set expectations after reuniting with his former Tottenham Hotspur teammate.

Son’s signing came as a surprise, with the South Korean star announcing his departure from Tottenham at a recent press conference. LAFC moved quickly to secure the deal, reportedly paying up to $26.5 million, the largest transfer fee in MLS history.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, Lloris shared his excitement about teaming up with Son again: “Honestly, I’m really excited to start this new chapter with him. We spent almost eight years together. It’s a lot, sharing so many days, so many games, so many training sessions. It’s really interesting to see this relation again in a different environment. But I guarantee you that there’s still this motivation, this ambition in his eyes. It’s a very great addition to the team.”

The veteran goalkeeper also set high expectations for Son’s impact in Los Angeles. “Seeing him coming to MLS, it’s great for the league, great for the city, great for the club, also great for him because he’s the kind of example where there’s plenty of things to learn from him. The way he trains, the way he prepares himself, the way he competes – I expect him to have a really big impact in the club.”

Both Lloris and Son rank among the top 10 players in appearances for Tottenham, notably featuring in the club’s 2019 UEFA Champions League final run. Now reunited in Los Angeles, they face a new challenge, one Lloris believes his longtime teammate is ready to embrace.

During Thursday’s unveiling, Son made it clear he’s ready to get started. “My fitness is great, as I just went through preseason. I came here to play soccer, and I’m ready to play, but there’s some preparation work to do. I’ll work with the coaching staff to get on the pitch as soon as possible.”
