La Liga has once again shown its dominance of the UEFA Champions League.
Prior to Real Madrid’s 1-0 victory over Atletico Madrid, the Spanish league was already guaranteed of having two representatives in the Champions League semi-final for the fifth year in a row.
No other league can boast having more than one team in the “Final Four” of Europe during that five-year period.
Real Madrid and Barcelona reached the semi-finals in 2010-11, 2011-12 and 2012-13, while Atletico Madrid replaced Barcelona during last season’s tournament.
During that time, La Liga has had two teams crowned champions of Europe. Barcelona were title winners in 2010-11, after beating Real Madrid in the semis and Manchester United in the final; and Real Madrid took home their tenth European Cup last season by beating Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid, respectively.
Should Real Madrid or Barcelona win the title this season, it would be three European Cups in five years for La Liga.
The last time a league dominated Europe’s top club competition was a three-year stretch which began with the 2006-07 campaign.
During that period, the Premier League had three English teams make up the four Champions League semi-finalists in successive seasons ending in the 2008-09.
However, since that time the Premier League only had one representative in the semi-finals; with no teams reaching the Champions League quarter-finals this season.
