Harry Kane suffers major setback ahead of potential curse-breaking Bundesliga title game with Bayern Munich

Harry Kane’s biggest frustration throughout his prolific career has been his lack of team trophies, despite showcasing elite goal-scoring prowess over the years. Now, as Bayern Munich close in on the Bundesliga title, Kane has suffered a major setback ahead of what could have been his curse-breaking moment.

On Saturday, Bayern hosted Mainz 05 for Matchday 31 of the 2024–25 Bundesliga season. The home side secured a dominant 3-0 win, extending their lead at the top of the table to 75 points — eight points clear of second-place Bayer Leverkusen.

With only three matches remaining in Germany’s top flight, Bayern will visit RB Leipzig next Saturday. If they manage to claim three points on the road, Kane could finally break his infamous trophy drought. However, he will not be able to take part in the potential title-clinching game — and for an unusual reason.

Kane received his fifth yellow card of the season, triggering an automatic one-match suspension due to card accumulation. As a result, the English striker will miss the clash against Leipzig and won’t be on the field to celebrate with his teammates if they secure the title.

The incident occurred during a midfield collision with Jonathan Burkardt, after which referee Bastian Dankert called a foul against Kane. Moments later, Kane grabbed the ball and confronted Paul Nebel and Nadiem Amiri in a brief dispute for possession, prompting Dankert to book him for delaying the restart.

After a career filled with individual accolades — including top scorer awards and multiple runner-up finishes in major tournaments like the Champions League, two English League Cups, and two UEFA Euros with England — Kane is finally on the verge of winning his first major trophy. Yet, due to suspension, he may not celebrate it on the field.

Kane continues making history as a goal scorer

Despite the lack of team silverware, Kane’s career has been defined by remarkable goal-scoring milestones. With three Bundesliga matches remaining, he is on the verge of adding even more records to his name.

Last week, after scoring against Heidenheim, Kane became the fastest player in Bundesliga history to reach 60 goals, achieving the mark in just 60 matches. He broke the previous record held by Erling Haaland, who needed 65 games with Borussia Dortmund to reach the same milestone.

Currently, Kane leads the Bundesliga scoring charts with 24 goals, followed by Patrick Schick with 19. If Kane maintains his advantage, he would become the first player ever to win the Bundesliga Golden Boot in each of his first two seasons in Germany.
